This release note provides information on the latest posting of AMD's Proprietary Linux driver. This particular driver updates the software version to 8.532.

Operating Systems Distributions Supported
The latest version of the Catalyst™ Linux software suite is designed to support the following Linux distributions:
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux suite
- Novell/SuSE product suite
- Ubuntu 8.04
- Red Flag
Note: The Catalyst™ Linux software suite may install on a number of other Linux distributions. Refer to the Package Generation installation instructions for more information.
Note: AMD has accepted contributed packaging scripts to allows creation of other packages, but does not necessarily test, verify or warrant the reliability. Currently Red Hat Enterprise Linux suite and Novell/SuSE product suite are supported Linux distributions
System Requirements
Before attempting to install the Catalyst™ Linux software suite, the following software must be installed:
- XOrg 6.8, 6.9, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2 or 7.3
- Linux Kernel 2.6 and above
- glibc version 2.2 or 2.3
- POSIX Shared Memory (/dev/shm) support is required for 3D applications
The Catalyst™ Linux software suite no longer provides precompiled Kernel Modules; all installations require GCC compiler and kernel-headers or kernel-source in order to enable 2D and 3D acceleration.
For best performance and ease of use, AMD recommends the following:
- Kernel module build environment - should include the following:
- Kernel source code: Either the Kernel Source or Kernel Headers packages
- The rpm utility should be installed and configured correctly on your system, if you intend to install via RPM packages
The following packages must be installed in order for the Catalyst™ Linux driver to install and work properly:
- XFree86-Mesa-libGL
- libstdc++
- libgcc
- XFree86-libs
- fontconfig
- freetype
- zlib

Resolved Issues
The following section provide a brief description of resolved issues with the latest version of the ATI Catalyst™ Linux software suite. These include:
· A fatal server error no longer occurs when changing the display resolution using Catalyst Control Center Linux Edition and restarting X. Further details can be found in topic number: 737-37419
· Catalyst Control Center Linux Edition: Clicking on the 3D leaf in Page Tree no longer results in 3D Page Tree failing to respond. Further details can be found in topic number: 737-37425
· Catalyst Control Center Linux Edition: A green box at the bottom of the page the TV and Position page is no longer displayed. Further details can be found in topic number: 737-37426
· Default buttons are no longer available in the Catalyst Control Center for driver options that do not have custom settings available. Further details can be found in topic number: 737-37427
· HDMI Audio support for the Linux Operating system is now available for the ATI Radeon HD 3100/3200 series of products. Further details can be found in topic number: 737-37420
· Hot plugging a digital panel to an ATI Radeon HD 46x0 series product no longer results in the digital panel failing to become active. Further details can be found in topic number: 737-37421
· X-Windows no longer fails to launch after the driver installation for the ATI Radeon HD 4870 product. Further details can be found in topic number: 737-37422
· Rebooting the system after completing the driver installation no longer results in X failing to re-start on systems containing an ATI FireGL V7700 series of product. Further details can be found in topic number: 737-37431
· X no longer fails to respond when shutting down in dual head mode. Further details can be found in topic number: 737-37430
· The entire X desktop including the mouse cursor is no longer choppy during playback of video files or suzi test app. Further details can be found in topic number: 737-37423
· The TV size and position adjusting sliders are no longer missing on systems running Linux. Further details can be found in topic number: 737-37424
· Running aticonfig –initial –f on a system with two display devices connected no longer results in dual head mode failing to function. Further details can be found in topic number: 737-37438

· The resolutions of 540p and 1080p @ 60Hz no longer fail to be added to the Display Manager list of resolutions when they are selected from HDTV -> Formats. Further details can be found in topic number: 737-37435
· Connecting an HDMI display device and connecting an HDMI cable from the graphics card to the display device no longer results in audio failing. Further details can be found in topic number: 737-37436
· Closing fgl_glxgears or glxgears via the toolkit “X” in a multi-head dual-head environment no longer results in a segmentation fault. Further details can be found in topic number: 737-37432

· GLESX: An unresolved symbol error is no longer noticed in the XOrg log. Further details can be found in topic number: 737-37442

· Doom 3: The performance gap between Windows XP and Linux no longer increases when CrossFire is enabled. Further details can be found in topic number: 737-37434

Known Issues
The following section provides a brief description of known issues associated with the latest version of ATI Catalyst™ Linux software suite. These issues include:
· SUSE 10.3 32-bit: The operating system mail fail to respond when pressing “Ctrl+Alt+F7/F8” to switch sessions when “fgl_glxgears” is running. Further details can be found in topic number: 737-37445
· SUSE 10.3 or RHEL 5.1: The operating system may fail occasionally to respond when running fgl_glxgears. Further details can be found in topic number: 737-37451
· RHEL 5.1 32-bit/64-bit and SUSE 10.3 32-bit/64-bit: The operating system may fail to launch after the installation of the graphics driver. Further details can be found in topic number: 737-37448
· Undefined symbols may be noticed when trying to load fglrx on Ubuntu 8.10. Further details can be found in topic number: 737-37447
· Softimage XSI Ariane x64: A segmentation fault may occur when loading the application. Further details can be found in topic number: 737-37457
· SPECViewperf 8.1: Running the standard DPPT tests may intermittently result in RHEL 5.2 operating system failing to respond on systems containing an ATI FireGL V7700 series of product. Further details can be found in topic number: 737-37455
· Poor performance may intermittently be noticed when running GTKperf on systems containing an ATI Radeon HD 38x0 or newer product. Further details can be found in topic number: 737-37444
· Playing a video file under X may result in the player displaying a blank image and the audio being choppy. Further details can be found in topic number: 737-37446
· Setting the display resolution to 1600x600 on a system running SUSE 10.3 (32/64bit) or RHEL 5.1 (32/64bit) may result in only half of the image being displayed. Further details can be found in topic number: 737-37449
· The system may hard hang when logging on to the X Server after the installation of the driver package. Further details can be found in topic number: 737-37450
· Entering a standby state while running a 3D application may result in desktop corruption being noticed when resuming the system. Further details can be found in topic number: 737-37452
· Running Xtest may result in the operating system failing to respond. Further details can be found in topic number: 737-37454
· A segmentation fault may occur when closing AMD CCC LE. Further details can be found in topic number: 737-37456
