이온을 이용한 쿨링

소형 바람 발생기

미국의 한 연구소에서 대전된 입자나 이온으로 구성된 바람을 생성해서 컴퓨터 칩을 쿨링하는 기술을 개발중 이라고 합니다.

Purdue University의 기계공학 부교수이면서 논문의 저자이기도한 Timothy Fisher 는 "컴퓨터와 전자기기에서 파워 = 발열과 같으며 좀더 파워풀한 랩탑과 핸드헬드 컴퓨터의 열 발생을 제어하기 위한 방법을 찾아야 했습니다." 라고 언급하였습니다.

전통적인 팬을 이용한 쿨링은 공기의 흐름과 관련하여 문제가 있는데 이는 바람의 입자가 칩에 가까워지면 멈추거나 정지할 수 있고 이것은 쿨링의 효과를 감소 시킨다고 합니다.

새 로운 쿨링 방식의 프로토타입 장비는 가상의 컴퓨터 칩에 부착하여 대전된 입자를 장비의 한쪽 끝에서 다른쪽 끝으로 이동시키는 방식을 이용한다고 하며 이는 이온 발생기에 전압이 인가되면 양극으로 대전된 입자(이온)가 생성되고 음극으로 대전된 와이어(음극선)쪽으로 끌려가는 현상과 같은데 이를 이용해 강제적인 공기의 움직임을 유지시켜 준다고 합니다.

실험 결과 기존의 팬만을 이용한 쿨링보다 40%-50%의 성능 향상이 있었으며 일부의 경우 250%의 향상이 있었다고 합니다. 현재 소형화를 진행중이며 성공할 경우 3년 이내 실용화를 계획중 이라고 합니다.
